Wednesday - Twin Plagues. LP [2023 Reissue]
A Wednesday song is a quilt. A short story collection, a half-memory, a patchwork of portraits of the American south, disparate moments that somehow make sense as a whole. Half-funny, half-tragic dispatches from North Carolina unfurling somewhere between the wailing skuzz of Nineties shoegaze and classic country twang, that distorted lap steel and Karly Hartzman’s voice slicing through the din.
Twin Plagues delivers so many standout moments. 'Cody's Only' I'd argue, is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Lapsteel emerges from a shoegaze haze & Hartzman's vocals lead us into an impossibly perfect Lenderman riff. This kind of stuff just keeps on happening. We can't get enough.
