Whispers of Adelaide’s Swapmeet have been making the rounds ever since the release of their brilliant 2024 single ‘Collision’. Blending hazy, warped instrumentals, delicate guitar and muted vocals delivered like they’ve got a intimate secret needing to be locked up tight. They immediately felt totally singular, operating uniquely from everyone else in the alt rock space right now.
After a string of killer shows they quietly had the scene alight with a different kind of buzz, swapping instruments and vocal duties constantly & mixing tounge-in-cheek samples with a swagger like few others. They quickly announced themselves as not only one of the best live bands but one of the most fun too.
Their debut album ‘Mount Zero’ delivers on all that early promise and fanfare in spaces, giving us a record that doesn’t waste a single second. Swapping between crushing guitar driven moments ala Sonic Youth or Pavement and tender instances of calm and composure at the drop of a hat, it’s a record that dips its toes into multiple pools, never quite intent of settling down in any of them for too long.
But it’s this explorative nature and boldness to push themselves that allows the album to rapidly rise above the rest. Swapmeet have arrived fully formed, navigating the hype and pressure seemingly with ease and have delivered undoubtedly one of the best albums of the year.
