Rather than jumping straight into the next new thing like his former bandmate Geordie Greep after Black Midi’s abrupt collapse, founding member of the UK’s most wildly interesting and head scratchingly chaotic band Cameron Picton opted to give things a little time to breathe. Picton’s tender voice was largely responsible for some of the most gorgeously eccentric moments Black Midi ever offered, so it’s no surprise that with his debut album as ‘My New Band Believe’ he doubles down on those smooth sounds, but still never dumbing it down for you.

This is a real “album’s album”, with lush orchestration swelling over the top of delicately plucked nylon string guitars and pianos on the albums first single ‘Love Story’. Here Picton’s depiction of a perfect evening takes stock in the little things, the in-between moments we often take for granted, cooking, dancing together, that might seem small on the surface but truly make up the basis of any strong and loving foundation. But as always, there's a twist and it's rarely ever that straight forward as the simple love song derails into chaos and tragedy in the final third.

My New Band Believe lives up to the hype that Black Midi and Geordie Greep’s ‘The New Sound pressed upon him. Musically this is as exciting and awe- inspiring as anything he’s ever done, throwing himself completely into it. Moving from Beatles-esque pop moments to soft folk or classical exploration in the blink of an eye. This is Picton’s modern depiction of what a “singer-songwriter” album can be in 2026. Totally devoid of limits, here he’s not bound to the genre’s traditional conventions at all. It really shouldn’t come as any surprise here that he continues the musical ethos his former band always tried to hammer home with each release - If it’s not interesting or new, why do it at all?
