Jeff Tweedy - Twilight Override. 3LP

Jeff Tweedy has always felt like he’s struck this interesting balance between the everyday man and this last of a dying breed mythical songwriter draped in mystic and metaphors. He’s someone who feels so approachable that he could be your neighbor but also has the back catalog that would make anyone jealous. The ‘Wilco’ frontman has no shortage of projects in his nearly 40 year career, with early work with ‘Uncle Tupelo’ laying the foundation for what he would go on to achieve with his main band Wilco, his collaborative project with his son Spencer aptly called ‘Tweedy’ and a slew of solo albums, to say he's prolific feels like an understatement.

Now onto his 5th solo album he has a crack at the fabled triple album, which if im honest scared me initially.... Not because i didnt think he could do it but there's just so much room for mistakes or filler that even the best artists fall victim and end up meandering and tripping over the point they’re trying to make. Luckily ‘Twilight Override’ not only is a pure joy to listen to, it's Tweedy’s most complete and rewarding album to listen to arguably since 2011’s “The Whole Love”.

‘Twilight Override’ on the surface could feel undoubtedly loose, with Tweedy being so casual about it he even opted to invite fans to contribute to some of his verses. But he continues to pull it all together with a beautifully recorded album that embraces you with a warm hug. This is pure fan service but not in an overly indulgent way, with Jeff giving us something more akin to one of his books rather than an album in the traditional sense; it's a compelling, funny and genuinely moving glimpse into the current mind of one of the best songwriters ever and though it might be intimidating clocking in at just under 2 hours with a whopping 30(!) tracks to get through, if you give it the time like a good book it'll be hard to put it down.

For fans of Adrianne Lenker, Waxahatchee & Cass McCombs
