Ethel Cain - Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You. LP
Our gothic, alternative, Americana-pop queen is back with another devastating record.
Returning with another concept album that stands as a prequel to ‘Preacher’s Daughter’, Ethel Cain aka Hayden Anhedonia has returned with ‘Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You’ and reminds us why this project, with all it’s lore, has sad music lovers in a chokehold.
The lead singles ‘Nettles’ and ‘Fuck Me Eyes’ seem to represent the expansive genre classification of this album. The former, a devastating Americana-folk, singer-songwriter track, heavy on the strings, with the latter feeling 80s inspired. Thinks synths not dissimilar to Springsteen’s ’Secret Garden’ and The Blue Nile’s ‘Downtown Lights’.
The use of these particular synths was inspired by the Twin Peaks soundtrack. It’s not lost on Anhedonia’s audience that — like Twin Peaks — the story of Ethel Cain is centred around a young heroine tragically killed.
This record — much like ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ — has a way of balancing the heavy, dark and gothic themes with heavenly vocals and instrumentation.
‘Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You’ is Hayden Anhedonia’s storytelling at its finest.
