Dust - Sky Is Falling. LP [Purple Vinyl]
Long awaited debut album from quickly rising Newcastle post-punk 5 piece dust finds them at somewhat of a crossroads. With ‘Sky Is Falling’ dust feel at odds with themselves, desperately looking for a sign of true life on this deeply introspective and moving listen they’ve gifted us 10 brooding and heartfelt tracks, battling with themselves over and over again be that the anxieties of relationships, a feeling of impending doom and their place within the world.
Still giving us their signature no frills, hard as you like brand of intense guitar rock but with a slight twist this time round, weaving in more melancholic, tender moments creating this perfect balance. Early single “Drawbacks” finds the band playing for their lives, with one of the most spirited drumming performances since The Walkmens “The Rat”. “Alastair” sways with the kind of gentle swagger as some of the best tracks by the cure while “Just Like Ice” gives dual vocalists Gabe and Justin the chance to have their first moment trading verses, almost egging each other on it embodies everything that's so great about the band, this unapologetic desire to experiment and not ever hold anything back.
From touring with Interpol and bloc party to shows at Pitchfork Festival and SXSW, the band has accomplished so much in such a short amount of time, the pressure must have been palpable… but for dust they grab it and use it as ammunition, which is undoubtedly going to propel them onto much greater things. Not only is Sky Is Falling one of the best local albums of the year, it’s easily one of the best guitar albums of the year and a statement of intent if there ever was one.
