I don't even think Charli herself could have imagined the unrivalled cultural moment that spawned from her 6th studio album 'BRAT'. It's was truly all encompassing, thrusting her from a darling of alt-pop and electronic music into a fully fledged pop superstar in the blink of an eye. It's safe too say that 2024 was undoubtedly her year.
So how do you follow up one of the most critically lauded and culturally significant albums of the millennium? Well, in Charli's case you deconstruct it and mould it into something completely new. You'd be forgiven for thinking that after the lead single 'Rock Music' came out that the new Charli album would be a total 180, and to a certain extent it is, just maybe not quite in the traditional way. All her sleek, pop elements are still there but are backed by a new glitchy, distorted guitar facelift.
Alongside frequent collaborator A.G Cook she samples and bends organic instruments and pulsating distortion to perfectly fit her electronic, self confessional diary entry. Here Charli wrestles with the huge life moments that have cropped up alongside her world domination; getting married & moving into your mid 30's and all the self doubt and mental gymnastics that comes with that. It's a deeply personal and welcome sidestep from one of this decades true musical visionaries. For better or worse 'Music, Fashion, Film' succeeds because of it's ability to not rest on the wins of the past but rather fight to create something different and innovative.
