Bar Italia - Some Like It Hot [Turquoise Vinyl]
Sometimes it feels like indie rock had lost a bit of its edge, it feels far too polite now with that snark, grit and “we don’t give a fuck” attitude that reigned supreme during the 90’s and early 2000’s becoming somewhat of a distant memory. The Brit-pop era was rife with bands like Blur, Oasis and Pulp that all existed in their own worlds but shared that same disregard for the rules and each other.
London trio Bar Italia have been quietly drumming up that same kind of frenetic, middle finger energy since they signed to the iconic Matador Records in 2023. Now on their 5th album the band feel like they’re about to explode. ‘Some Like It Hot’ hits like a slap to the face, a reminder that their razor sharp version of indie rock and post punk still has all the bite of those bygone era’s all delivered with a charm and bratty energy that could only exist in 2025.
With members Nina, Sam and Jezmi all the vocal performances throughout the record there's a kinship between them that nails the heavy hitting and brash moments on “Some Like It Hot’ down. Each with their own distinct style of nonchalant and unapologetic shout-spoken deliveries, they continue to trade vocals throughout with it constantly sounding like they’re trying to one up each other at every turn. Mixing that in with their effortlessly catchy, hook laden guitar work and stellar songwriting it makes for one hell of a rock record that's hard to put down.
