Swedish popstar Robyn exists within the pluming smoke of the hours after midnight, arriving precisely when she’s supposed to. Even though it's been 8 years since her last effort, 2018’s dazzling “Honey”, it’s never really felt like she’s left at all because her totally singular take on pop seems to reverberate across the genre until she comes back out of hibernation. Unlike almost any other pop star Robyn always feels approachable and relatable, bridging the gap between total world beater and underground cult hero, managing to gracefully exist in the in-between. 

Robyn’s career is a testament that just because your song isn’t a “hit” in the traditional sense or within the US charts system it doesn’t mean that there isn’t an audience for it. Her re-introduction with 2010’s Body Talk Pt 1 & 2 hammered home that sentiment as good as anyone else has. Her 9th studio album “Sexistential” brings Robyn back to the world of straight up pop ear worms, leaving the club-focused world of ‘Honey’ in the rear view mirror. It then feels very fitting that for this pure pop odyssey resurgence, that she re-establishes an old partnership from her teenage years with fellow Swedish producer to the stars Max Martin.

Even though Robyn, now a new mother to her son, is moving into her mid-life era, ‘Sexistential’ totally subverts the tired “mature album” trope some pop stars seem to fall into, instead leaning into her deepest, freakish desires. In many other hands this album could just be another run of the mill synth-filled dance pop album, but Robyn’s secret superpower is in her voice. Possessing more emotive range than nearly all her peers, she takes flight, reaching unmatched heights and reminding everyone who the true queen of pop is.
