Jeff Parker ETA IVtet - Happy Today. LP
Chicago's Jeff Parker at this point is truly a modern guitar great. His ability to move from nuanced experimental rock to free flowing jazz across work with Tortoise, Isotope 217 and his own solo work is nothing short of breathtaking.
'Happy Today' marks the third project from ETA IVtet, a live recording of two distinct movements featuring a who's who of modern jazz with drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss & Saxophonist Josh Johnston all operating as one gracefully and versatile organism.
Across it's 44 minutes Parker and co create a captivating and hypnotic energy within LA's Lodge Room, using fluid, minimalistic repetition as a foundation they each ebb and flow delicately around one another with ease.
Tapping into what is potentially their most sonically bright and bubbly offering so far, the telepathy they all possess to individually convey these positive concepts while navigating turbulent times in their own personal lives is incredible.
The live set was stunningly captured by engineer Bryce Gonzales using a custom made analog mixer and Nagra stereo tape recorder. The result is a warm and comforting exploration into four of the most inspired minds currently making music.
Very few live recordings have the same ability to immediately transport you into the room quite like 'Happy Today' does and here they never miss a beat.
