Our Album Of The Week comes from Julia Jacklin, who feels like she's constantly been moving to her own groove, never fussed with the movings around her she’s carved out a truly special corner within modern alternative music. Rather than flipping her music on it’s head and fully reinventing herself shes instead opted for the subtle craftsman approach, slowly elevating all the little nuances that make her delicate brand of alternative folk and rock music so powerful.
4th album ‘The Gem’ is yet another beautifully bespoke effort in maximalizing these talents. In many ways it’s the most straightforward record since her debut, and the musical relationship with longtime friend Robert Muinos perfectly complements the records subtle tendancies.
Early album highlight and contender for one of her very best ‘If I Had The Hand of God” continues her complicated relationship with religion and anxiety, giving one of her most assured performances to date to the backdrop of crunching guitars commanding percussion.
It’s her affinity for simplicity over anything else that makes her so constantly great, giving the songs everything they need before any other bells or whistles are added these stunningly recorded set of songs feels like everything is falling into place.
‘The Gem’ is a commanding album from an artist that knows exactly what she wants to make. Even if she’s still grabbling between the want for solitide and fully opening up her world, what a privilidge it is to get to listen to her figure it out in real time.
