Big Thief - Double Infinity. 2LP [Green Recycled Vinyl]
After going on what feels like a generational run of albums starting with their energetically loose 2016 debut “Masterpiece” all the way through 2022’s hugely impressive double album “Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You” the Brooklyn band felt like they were untouchable. Melodically rich and layered with introspective and thoughtful poetry all delivered with a style and flair that only they could do. They were in a league of their own.
Their 6th album “Double Infinity” provides somewhat of a shake up after the departure of founding bassist Max Oleartchik it was always going to be intriguing what the next project would be like. Big Thief has always had this incredible closeness, almost operating as one organism, so any break in that status quo could have been detrimental. Thankfully, the now trio of Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek and James Krivchenia retain their signature distinct personality. Krivchenia's wild yet clean scattershot drumming, impressionistic guitar work from Meek and of course Lenker's transportative storytelling acting as a ground to the chaos all remain intact.
For Double Infinity they bring in a cast of 13 musicians playing together live in the same room across every song, managing to sound like nothing else in their catalog but also so distinctly Big Thief at the same time. Despite navigating all this, the songs get never lost or collapse in on themselves, instead each moment gracefully washes over you. Everyone is playing as one for the good of the song, not against it. This new version of the band has created a texturally dense and otherworldly “folk” album like no other, keeping the writing simple yet effective. In many ways this is the most “Big Thief” album they’ve created so far, a communally driven indie-folk land where they’re flourishing together as one.
