Bon Iver - Volumes: One Selections From Music Concerts 2019-2023 Bon Iver 6 Piece Band. LP
Since our introduction in 2007 to Justin Vernon’s visionary & imaginatively unmatched fusion of folk, electronica and experimental music there’ve been very few that have managed to capture the same “Lightning in a Bottle” energy he did back then. From his now rather humble beginnings with ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ to the maximalist and bitcrushed approach to soul music on ‘22, A Million’, Vernon has consistently kept us on the edge of our seats awaiting where he might go next.
Bon Iver as a live act has undergone a multitude of different iterations through the years. Their skeletal folk-laden breakout, or the monstrous 9 piece band bringing the epic compositions of his true breakout 2011 self-titled album to life right up to the present day. Bon Iver has become a truly well oiled machine, merging together a hybrid of otherworldly electronics and beautiful organic sounds which are all wrapped around Vernon's delicate signature croon. His voice is undoubtedly singular and unique, carrying itself above the chaos he and his band are creating around it. Whether it’s drenched in auto tune, a soft but powerful falsetto or his regular smooth warble, this is his distinctive superpower.
In what is a total victory lap, Vernon and co. now take their first stab at a live album. After touring relentlessly for damn near 20 years, 'Selections’ is a vivid celebration of everything that's come before and an example of an artist that treats his shows like extensions of each album release. Featuring live performances from across the United States, Italy, Indonesia & Australia, this first offering makes the case of supremacy for what is now undoubtedly one of the best live bands and experiences you can have. From the first moments of the beautifully captured piano stabs of ‘Man Like You’ ring out, it feels like you’re there witnessing it in the flesh. ‘Selections’ is not only one of the best live albums of the 21st century, it’s one of the best of all time, which is very fitting for one of this generation's true innovators.
