Mac Demarco - Guitar. LP [Orange Vinyl]
Indie rock darling Mac Demarco is back with his 6th studio album Guitar, his first “proper” record after recently dialing back the traditional songwriting in favour of dabbling in instrumentals on 5 Easy Hot Dogs and mega demo compilation One Wayne G, so it was always going to be intriguing where the prolific singer songwriter would take us next.
Returning with a newfound touch of grace and wisdom that can only come with age, Guitar feels beautifully delicate and approachable like you’re walking down an old street you’ve not been to in a while but everything's the same. Taking care of everything himself this time around he perfectly utilizes gently strummed guitars, soft thud of drums and his steady bass to cushion the musings of a once hyper energetic and supreme class clown who’s now matured into a well rounded man that takes joy in the simple things in life. It’s the introspective portrait of Mac simply trying to navigate his 30’s and at its core Guitar is an experience that wraps you up in its warmth and tells you it's all going to work out.
While the songs may be simple in nature and at times almost totally stripped down to their absolute bare elements, as always it's Mac’s palpable charm and charisma that help lift his songwriting to a different level, with every track feeling like it could be delivered with a cheeky wink only he could provide. Guitar presents a sort of total clarity that could only be achieved by the once ultimate partier who’s now sober, looking to settle down and take a birds eye view of his younger self. He’s the relatable everyman and with his laidback 6th record he unwinds at a languid pace giving nods to the relationships that have kept him afloat all these years.
