Never Enough is the 4th studio album from Baltimore hardcore royalty Turnstile. After the release of 2021’s Glow On, their first foray into lacing their signature brand of “for the people” hardcore with dream pop and indie, Turnstile set the world alight. Like Deafheaven’s Sunbather did, Glow On was a massive gateway for a new generation of hardcore fans. Insanely catchy riffs over sparkly pristine synths and frontman Brendon Yates towering vocals, it was hard to not get swept up in the mayhem.
Never Enough is the daring and brave follow up - a sequel of sorts to an album that already sparked controversy amongst the hardcore world - and it's them jumping further down the rabbit hole of their creation. For some fans it begs the question: is Turnstile still a hardcore band? When really what we should be thinking about is are they still true to themselves which is a resounding yes!
Never Enough jumps through a multitude of different stylistic changes from hardcore, post-hardcore, breakbeat & idm (!!), ambient pop, dream pop and pop punk which might catch some people off guard but they’ve still got all the hallmarks of a Turnstile record with huge riffs and scream along hooks galore. Return collaborators Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange and BADBADNOTGOOD’s Leland Whitty feature on vocals, cello and sax plus surprise appearances from Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Faye Webster if you listen clearly enough.
It’s as visual as they’ve ever been with Yates and Guitarist Pat McCrory directing videos for EVERY single one of the 14 tracks. All extremely stylized and not just for show, turning each into an accompanying film which pairs perfectly, and in many ways, feels just as much a part of the moment as the music itself.
Never Enough is truly an admirable balancing act between “where will they go next” left turns and “true to themselves” hard as nails hardcore. Turn this one up loud.
